Collecting Promotional Items
As long as humans have been selling items to each other, there have been examples of promotional items and advertising. Collecting these promo items or ads is a great way to not only see the evolution of a brand, remember personal experiences with the brand in the past, but to see how the styles and design of popular culture has changed throughout the years. Promotional items, specifically, are such a niche market that the value of such items generally remains high, and the availability of the items is scarce,
creating more desire on the parts of collectors, especially if the items create a sense of nostalgia on the part of the collector.

Some of the most sought after promotional collectibles include music posters from various bands, plastic and metal die cast cars from automobile dealers and manufacturers, and advertising icons from various food companies including the Pillsbury Doughboy, Ronald McDonald, Tony the Tiger, Aunt Jemima, and the Campbells Soup Kids, Elsie the Cow, and Mr. Peanut from the Planters Peanut Company.

Seeking out these items is not that difficult in these days with sites such as Ebay making it easy to find exactly what you are looking for. Smaller auction sites and houses are also online with many interesting listings, but these items are still widely found at thrift stores, garage sales, estate sales and live antique auctions. Also, check swap meets and antique stores as well. Antique stores will typically carry the higher end promo items that are much harder to find. Street fairs in larger cities are a great resource for music and band promos, as well as certain advertising signs.

One of the most important considerations when collecting anything, including promotional items is authenticity. There are many guides available at regular and online bookstores to help you determine both authenticity and market value. Ebay sellers are very helpful with this as well, and there are many, many guides available from Amazon.com written by various different experts. Be sure to verify your item is authentic before attempting to sell it on the market or to a dealer, or you could be in for a rude surprise.

Market value of any promo item is widely variable, and depends upon a number of factors, including the age of the promo, the quality of the item and how well it has been preserved, whether or not the item contains intact original packaging, the demand for the particular type of collectible or promotion series and the rarity of the item. Items that feature a popular icon combined with a brand seem to be the most popular, such as a Chex cereal promo featuring the characters from Peanuts. The promo was only available for a limited time in limited quantities, and featured iconic character that inspired nostalgia. These factors all add up to increase the value.

The variety and possibility of collecting these limited edition promotional items is infinite. It will require some research and concentrated digging, but with dedication and perseverance, you should be able to find plenty of items to add to your collection.
