Collecting Baskets
At one point in our lives, we have collected something. It could have been coins, dolls, miniature cars, bears ... What makes collecting these items special is the beauty that we find in them, the pleasure derived from admiring them, and of course the thrill of the hunt. Hunting for these treasures is the fun part. One of the most fascinating hobbies is collecting baskets. People, who collect baskets, usually appreciate a characteristic of it, when they decide to form a collection. |

You can collect baskets for many reasons. A collection of baskets may be one that caters to a particular period in history. On the other hand, maybe, it may be a certain handmade type of basket, or style. Sometimes it is baskets of certain color, material, purpose, or a combination of many characteristics.
There are different types of baskets perfect to start your own collection. Some styles of baskets are Appalachian baskets, Nantucket baskets, Native American baskets, Shaker baskets, Amish baskets, Adirondack baskets, Southwestern baskets, Mexican or south American baskets, African baskets, baskets with Asian motifs, baskets made by a favorite artist or ethnic group, baskets with fruit or floral designs, animal designs, and many more. Collectors seek Nantucket and Longaberger baskets. Nantucket baskets are some of the most beautiful baskets to collect, and they can become pricey. These baskets may have designs of ships, shells, and other embellishments attached to them. Material also can be selected to start a collection - woven baskets, wood baskets, tin or metal baskets, plastic, chicken wire baskets, straw, rush, rattan, cloth baskets, baskets made of vine, and other materials. Some interesting baskets to collect are egg baskets, nesting basket set, Bushwhacker basket, contemporary and modern design baskets, traditional coiled pine needle basket, Sweet grass basket, Aborigine basket, gizzard shaped basket, Maori basket, palm basket, baskets with lids, tray basket (usually made to display cakes or pies), deep-high baskets, sewing basket, wine cooler basket, acorn baskets, and hanging baskets. There are many other types and interesting designs. Another form of basket collecting is by purpose or function. You can choose to display your baskets as a collection in a conglomerate, or you can decide to enjoy them by using them throughout your home. Some baskets, like wall or door baskets just serve a decorative purpose, and they can be used to put flowers in them. Other hanging baskets can have a storage purpose, for example to store candles or any other items, which you want to have accessible at all times - like paper and pens. Other baskets are just functional and you will use them for putting fruit, bread, and other items in it. Other types of functional baskets are picnic baskets, which have handles and can store a variety of items such as food, plates, and cutlery. A type of basket that we use every day and we hardly think of it as a basket is a deli basket. They usually are used instead of plates, to serve your food. Another type of basket that we do not think of as a basket, but certainly is one, is an air balloon basket, which is a giant and strong made basket to carry people through the air on a balloon ride. This has to be the biggest functional basket. You can find baskets anywhere. However, the most interesting types are found at antique shops, estate sales, flea markets, antique auctions, and even online on sites such as Amazon, and many others. Whether you collect baskets for fun, function, or pleasure, baskets are a beautiful object, which has been around since the human race became gatherers. |
