Rare and Collectable Books
We probably all have at least one bookshelf in our home that is chock full of books, but we probably consider most of those books to be worthless. While this may hold true for newer, modern books, many older books can fetch very high amounts of money, just for their collectability and rarity. Many people get into book collecting because they simply love reading. Others hope to collect books and hold onto them until they are worth more, at which point they will sell for a profit. |

Whatever your motive is for collecting books, thousands of people do it all around the world.
Purchasing rare books can be a scary process, especially because a lot of them can fetch fairly high amounts of money. You must know the correct place to shop for antique books and what to look for when you are purchasing them. The best place bar none to purchase used books is at live auctions. Go online and search for live antique auctions in your area on AuctionZip.com, there are probably more than you think. The great thing about auctions is that you can see the item you are bidding on before you purchase it. Also, there are almost always experts and appraisers there who can validate the authenticity of the item you are bidding on. Finally, you can often times get the books at a cheaper price at auction because of the way the bidding system is set up. Another venue to purchase antique books is online. There are a few things you need to be looking for. First, the website must be reputable, no questions asked. Do not go to a website that claims they sell used books, only to end up wiring $3,000 to an offshore bank account, never to see it again. A great website to purchase antique and collectible books on is Amazon.com. Before collectible books can be listed on Amazon the seller must show that they are professional and have experience in selling and grading books. I would urge caution when using online auction websites for a couple of reasons. The first is because you can't be sure you are going to be receiving a genuine antique book when you bid on it. You may end up receiving a replica or fake, which is a waste of money and scams do happen online, especially on expensive antique items. Also many people who list books online do not have the knowledge to properly grade the the condition of the book. If you are in possession of a book that you believe might be antique or collectible, it is recommended that you have it looked at so you can see the true value of it. There are several factors that determine the value of antique books. The importance of the work, the scarcity, the type of book (humanities and sciences are most sought after) and the edition status. First edition is most valuable, followed by second, third, etc. Also, the condition of the book plays a major factor in determining the value. The binding, paper health, scratches and dents are very important to take into consideration. |
