Antique & Collectible Buttons
We all know what buttons are. We use them everyday, most noticeably in our clothing. For most of us, buttons are worthless, and that is true considering the style of buttons we find on our clothing. However, there are certain kinds of buttons that are worth much more than just a few pennies. These buttons are called collector buttons, and are sought after by many collectors and enthusiasts. |

Many of the collector buttons are not made out of the same materials that you would find on your clothing. Many are made out of exotic materials such as ivory, glass, bone, crystal and ceramic materials. They range in size from a couple millimeters all the way up to a few inches across. Almost all of them have designs on them to spice them up and make them look better for collectors. Some designs are simple while others are actually hand drawn pictures of elaborate settings. Buttons that were used in Military uniforms are in especially high demand among collectors. Collectors and enthusiasts should take note that buttons have a tendency to get scratched very easily. If you own any valuable buttons, take extra precaution to keep them away from small children and animals.
If you want to get into the antique button collecting hobby, then you will need to purchase buttons. The buttons you find on your clothing won't pass as antiques, that's for sure. There are a few places that are reputable enough to sell antique buttons. Almost every city in America has an antique store, and almost every antique store has antique buttons. You can feel fairly safe buying from these stores because 99 times out of 100 the item you are buying is authentic and genuine. Only visit those antique stores that have a reputation for genuine products. Live antique auctions are the best place to purchase antique buttons by far. There are many reasons why live antique auctions are the superior medium for purchasing collector buttons. First of all, you are going to be surrounded by other button enthusiasts, so it will almost be like a button convention. Second, you will be able to see and feel the items before you purchase them, something you can't do on the internet. Third, you can pretty sure the buttons you are purchasing are genuine and authentic. Many antique auctions have experts on hand to validate this. To find an upcoming auction near you, just check on the internet at AuctionZip.com, you would be surprised at the amount of auctions that take place throughout the country. Collectable buttons can also be purchased online, although you need to be very cautious. When purchasing online, you can never be sure that you are actually going to receive what you thought you would from the seller's description. It's best to find a few reputable button sellers online and rely on their knowledge. Rather than simply shop for the lowest price. |
